// Commemorative insufficience//

I drove past it today,
the spot where I almost died.
They say it was off that road
in one of those trees,
but I cannot find it.
At least not among the hundreds
of other cross-less trees.

“Almost” isn’t worth it,
“Almost” isn’t quite enough.

“It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced—or seemed to face—the whole external world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. It understood you just so far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey.”

// Salao//

Keep rowing, old man

out past the others

past the horizon.

Keep listening, old man

to the flying fish

or swooping bird.

Keep waiting, old man

for the nibbled lines

and biggest bite.

Keep fighting, old man

through bloody pain

and dark, dark night.

// Q and A//

So you want to know
what makes me happy?
Well, just about anything
that makes you miserable
really.

// Screwdrive you//

Poetry,
he said…

write it when you’re drunk.

So I wrote it after vodka
and it still looked like shit.

There are way too many nights
that I settled for your shit.

// Love,//

look me in the eyes
every time you lie.

That way no matter
what you say, it’s true.
